Handle with Style

A handle can give a handbag a whole different look. Round, curlicue or straight. Single- or double-handled. Fabric, wooden or plastic. So many ways to add personality to your purse!

Go ahead… get carried away with the wide array of handle options available. Stitch your own straps for a custom look or purchase handles for a polished finish. For our Ruffled Revival (IJ889) bag, we used a pair of flat-style black leather straps, which allow for comfortable slinging on the wrist or shoulder. Satin brass O-rings attach easily to any fabric handbag.

Many of our handbags include several handle options, including the Gypsy Hobo (IJ911) and Permission Purse (IJ910). Our Grommet Grab Bag (IJ851) pattern includes two variations of handles, a single cord covered handle and a braided fabric version, looped through jumbo grommets. Each strap variation adds texture, grip and flair to a handbag.

Our Cinched Patchwork Satchel (IJ909) features a trio of handle options, including cotton belting and a sassy handmade pleather handle, displayed above.

Our book Handle with Style includes tips on using purchased handles and hardware, plus instructions on making fabric handles. Each set of stylish handles featured can be easily adapted to any of the patterns included in the book.

  1. I was in Tokyo last week and was amazed by all of the totally cute handbag handles there! There was even acute backpack strap kit.
